Role of the Occupational Therapist in Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Therapy

Abstract
Feeding and swallowing problem in children means not only swallowing problems, every issues associated with swallowing, feeding, and eating in their development. Especially, multiple feeding therapy is needed including Sucking-swallowing-breathing coordination in NICU, eating various type of food, using utensils, eating with social interaction, etc. Medical, physical, cognitive, behavioral, psychologic, social issues are causes that affect feeding and swallowing, and interaction with parent and children is important. To parent, feeding their child could be new occupation in one part of caring. As feeding specialist, Occupational therapist should assess, treat in various way, and understanding of parent-child feeding interactions and parent education is essential in treatment. For qualitative treatment service, therapist must get education of basic knowledge, keep attending workshop or seminar, have various experience, and get supervison and mentoring could be considered. So, occupational therapists in pediatric dysphagia should try their best continuously to give qualified treatment by understanding and experience about assessment and treatment of feeding development, feeding characters, parent-child feeding experience.
